History

Aircraft was introduced on the market in November 1955. Basically a Cessna 170 equipped with a nosewheel. A total of 3757 original 172's were build. Original 172 was succeeded by 172A in 1960.
Airframe
wing: High-wing braced monoplane, wing section NACA 2412. All-metal single spar with all-metal skin. Single-slotted flaps.
fuselage: All-metal semi-monocoque structure.
tail: Cantilever monoplane, all-metal structure, trim-tab in port elevator.
landing gear: Fixed tricycle type, Cessna 'Land-o-matic' spring-steel main legs, toe-operated brakes on main wheels. Steerable nosewheel on shock-absorbing strut. Floats or skis optional.
Powerplant

- One Continental O-300 horizontally-opposed, air-cooled 6-cylinder engine delivering 145 hp (107 kW).
- Engine drives a 2-blade fixed pitch propeller.
- Total fuel capacity 159 l (42 USG); 2 all-metal fuel tanks in wing.
